Scared?
God on Monday

But Jesus rebuked [the man with an unclean spirit], saying, ‘Be silent, and come out of him!’ And the unclean spirit, throwing him into convulsions and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
Mark 1:25-26
Reflection
In our walk of faith, there will be times when we are fearful. Fearful of what people will say when they find out we believe. Fearful of speaking out at an injustice in our workplace. Fearful of saying “no” to activities that would compromise our faith. Fearful of seeming foolish for having a faith.
I have been especially guilty of the latter. My biggest fear of people knowing I am a Christian is that they would not take me seriously as a professional coach and consultant. They may even see me as naïve and uninformed.
However, when I have been explicit in my faith, I have found that God has gone before me, allowing my fears to subside.
Once I was exhibiting at Olympia London and felt I should pray with my team, none of whom were believers. I worked myself into a stew. But finally, I found the courage to pray that we had a great exhibition that would result in lots of new business. No one gasped and no one fainted! One of my colleagues even commended me on being more open about my faith, in part because it would indicate to potential clients what sort of values I live by.
In the story cited from Mark’s Gospel above, Jesus rebukes an unclean spirit with such authority that astounded people. But with his confidence in the power of the Holy Spirit, he knew the demons were no match, and could act fearlessly and unashamedly.
When we think about what scares us, we need also to consider the authority God has given us. This will give us the courage to step out in faith, knowing that God will not let us down.
Each time I have done this, my confidence has grown. It means that the next time I fear, it is easier to identify it and then exercise the authority I have in Christ to confront evil and to share the good news of God’s love.
Response
What scares you making you shy away from doing the right things? Imagine all the benefits that would come from you stepping out in faith.
Prayer
Lord, you equip us with your gifts, and you love us immeasurably. Help us to bear witness to your authority; to stand for what is right and true; to resist fear; and to be motivated by your love. Amen.
