Working Alone?
God on Monday
Read previous
Then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always (Proverbs 8:30)
Reflection
Proverbs is a beautiful book that personifies wisdom and speaks plainly to the reader. Before the verse cited above, Wisdom is with God as the earth's foundations are laid. In verse 30, the reader discovers the sheer delight of Wisdom and God, in which this work of creation took place.
In my work, I want to do well. I want to enjoy it. I want to master my trade and be well thought of. I would also like to be a delight to work alongside! And yet I can so often tire of work. I sit at my desk on a Monday morning only to find my energy has dried up. No amount of caffeine can stimulate the change of heart I need.
But Wisdom can. Look at how Wisdom acts. She works alongside God. In our work this week, we need to think about where we are in our work. Are we going off alone, trying to carve our own path, or are we seeking to work beside God?
Wisdom is beside God; close to God; watching God; and learning from God. Wisdom is active with and present to God. All this brings delight, to Wisdom and God.
Proverbs reminds us, therefore, that God delights in seeing God’s Spirit at work in us and through us in our everyday lives. We in turn can be present to God, and rejoice in God in everything we do.
There will likely be times this week when our work is hard. But we get to do it beside God, bringing delight to ourselves and God.
Response
Consider where you may be labouring alone in your work. What habits or rhythms could you put in place to help ensure you work with God within you and alongside you?
Prayer
Father God, thank you that you delight in your people, and we can delight in you. Thank you for displaying Wisdom to us in Proverbs, and in Christ. Forgive me for when I have tried to work alone. Teach me, and shape me, to work beside you this week. Amen.
