The Path to Greatness

Jesus said to them, ‘You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you’
(Mark 10.42-43a). 

Reflection
The context in which these words are spoken is full of painful irony. Just after Jesus predicts his suffering, James and John ask for places of honour beside him. They have clearly missed Jesus’ message of denial and sacrifice. Instead, they are caught up in ambition in a quest for power and recognition. Jesus challenges them: can they endure the suffering that comes with true greatness? They confidently agree, proving only that they have not understood.

When the other disciples become angry at James and John’s request, Jesus gathers them all together to teach a sobering lesson: in God’s kingdom, greatness is measured by service, not position, power and privilege. To lead is to do as Jesus was doing - giving away his life for the sake of others. It was a lesson that clearly needed repeating, as his words ‘whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant’ (v. 43) echo those we find just one chapter earlier: ‘Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.’(Mk 9.35).

When I set out to live and work in a cross-cultural setting, I was eager to ’change the world’. Fortunately, a wise mentor gently exhorted me that the path would involve suffering and painful personal growth. Over time, I came to see the wisdom in this advice. I came to see that changing the world is not about achievement and recognition but about humility and service.

As leaders, there is nothing wrong with us wanting to be great leaders. But Christ shows us that true greatness can only be achieved by following his example. 

Response

As you consider the week ahead, think about how the ambitions you have in your work may negatively be impacting you and those around you. Seek Christ’s forgiveness and the Holy Spirit’s strength to serve with humility. Then walk the true path to greatness.

Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for the example we have in Jesus of what it means to be a truly great leader. Empower us by your Spirit to deny all selfish desires and to serve others with the humility with which you serve us. Amen.
