Called to Lead
God on Monday
Read previous
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. (Mark 1:16-18 NRSV)
Reflection
Every time I read these verses, I am amazed by Simon’s and Andrew’s swift obedience and willful surrender in dropping everything to follow Jesus. Perhaps it reflects the deep resonance they felt between Jesus’ words and their sense of purpose; Jesus was speaking to the core of their being.
If this is indeed the case, the encounter can teach leaders about sound recruitment practices. It shows Jesus as a leader who was laser-focused on his mission. He could articulate his vision and was clear about the kind of team required to carry out the assignment.
Jesus also had a compelling message. He knew his audience and related to them with simplicity, clarity, and authenticity. He spoke about what they knew – fishing – yet stimulated them to reimagine their potential as fishers of a different kind. He invited them to grow in their understanding of themselves and expand their vision of the impact they could make.
All these aspects of Jesus' leadership are worthy of emulation. We need to be clear about our organizations' missions and appeal to people whose purpose aligns with our work. We also need to communicate with them in compelling, affirming, and genuine ways. In doing so, we will inspire them and offer them a glimpse of their potential to meet new challenges.
Response
Take some time to consider the extent to which you understand the mission of your organization, and whether that mission aligns with your purpose. If not, ask God to open up new opportunities.
If you and your organization are well aligned, ask God to help you identify one colleague you can help live out their purpose through their work. This may require you to get to know your co-worker at a deeper level.
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for creating us with a purpose and for equipping us to fulfil it. Help us to be good stewards of our skills, resources, and influence so that we fulfil your will with joy and peace. Help us to be good brand ambassadors for your kingdom, as we act and speak with truth and love. May our attitudes and behaviour inspire people to follow you. And let the light inside us shine for your glory. Amen.
