Spirit-Led
God on Monday
Read previous
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God (Romans 8.14)
Reflection
When I worked as a hospital chaplain, expecting mothers would sometimes share with me their unexpected cravings or aversions to certain types of food. Something similar can happen - in spiritual terms - when we receive the Holy Spirit. The Spirit within us gives us new aversions to harmful thoughts and actions and new desires for wholesome thoughts and actions.
God has been in relationship with humankind since creation. Various biblical dispensations have passed since then. But the most interesting is the one that was set in motion with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. These events gave birth to the Christian faith. From then on, humans could experience a supernatural rebirth by the Holy Spirit that enabled them to become the children of God more fully than was possible merely by their natural birth.
For this new humanity, the indwelling Holy Spirit is central to its well-being. It is the oxygen and heartbeat of every Christian and the means by which they lead the life God intends for them.
As children of God, we are not left to navigate life on our own. We have the Spirit to lead and guide us. We may not always understand that guidance but we can be sure that God has called us through the Holy Spirit to serve God and our fellow human beings with whatever skills, experience or qualifications we have. As we do so, the Holy Spirit within us helps us navigate all the environments we find ourselves in, even toxic ones, whether at work or at home.
Response
Allow the Holy Spirit to take control of your life, transforming your heart and mind so that you become more like the child of God that you already are. Trust in the Spirit’s guidance.
Prayer
God Almighty, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. Thank you for the way this comforts and leads us to repentance and a deeper relationship with you. May we grow into the full stature of your Son, Jesus Christ, who is alive, and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
