A Generous God
God on Monday

‘While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles’ (Acts 10:44-45).
Reflection
Human beings vary greatly. But God’s love and grace extend to all of them, regardless of their talents, qualifications, race, or skin colour.
In the passage from Acts containing the above text, we find Peter addressing a crowd made up of people from different races and places. But they all appear to be in search of God. Whilst they are listening to Peter, the Holy Spirit comes upon them and they start speaking in tongues.
This scenario amazed the Jews, who thought that God was only interested in them. As far as they were concerned, Gentiles were outside the realm of God’s blessing.
This has a powerful message to teach us today, not least within our places of work. That is often where people with ‘low skills’ are looked down on, instead of being valued for having different but complementary skills to other workers. It is also often a place where people are treated unfairly because of their race, colour, identity, and background.
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Jews and Gentiles alike demonstrates that God gives generously to all. In the wake of it, Peter asks if there is anything to stop these people from getting baptized. As baptism is a symbol of becoming part of God’s family, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts 10 speaks of a God who is accommodating, generous and inclusive.
Response
Are we accommodating, generous, and inclusive, or have we erected barriers between ourselves and those from whom we differ? Consider how the way you work this week may need to change.
Prayer
Father, help me to be generous to all, including all those with whom I work. Give me a heart that overflows with your love and grace, especially towards those most different from me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
