Sacred Groaning
God on Monday
Read previous
‘We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now‘ (Romans 8.22).
Reflection
In this verse, we encounter the concept of 'groaning' in anticipation of future redemption. Our struggles can often cause us to groan, at least inwardly. Our sufferings are real and can be very raw, including those we face in our work. They are not separate from God's plan for redemption. Rather, they point to a larger purpose - the birth of a new creation.
In our work, we can face many challenges and setbacks. Projects are frustrating. Coworkers misunderstand us. Bosses and customers do not conform to our expectations. These are true sufferings, but they are not eternal. They point us to our hope in Christ.
Romans reminds us of our eternal inheritance. This inheritance does not provide an escape from suffering but a perspective. That perspective is that every hardship we endure, much like Christ's suffering, serves a greater purpose. God's glorious kingdom is coming, and our work - even the really troublesome aspects of it - brings us ever closer to God.
Response
Consider your week ahead. Identify a situation in your work in which you feel yourself 'groaning'. Imagine how God might act to redeem this, and ask God what part you might play in that action.
Prayer
Loving Father, in the midst of our work and its challenges, we seek your presence. We give thanks for the hope of redemption in Christ Jesus, assuring us that our labour is not without purpose. Let us reflect your redeeming love, and in anticipation, let us live out the promise of your Kingdom. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
